Finding Census Images

 Census - Introduction
For information on the various ways of finding and viewing census information about the people on this web site, see below.

For information about UK census dates, about the data collected in different census years, and about census referencing, click About UK Censuses.

 Census displays on this site
General Although census information is collected for most individuals recorded on this site, images of these census events are held only for households containing direct ancestors of Irene and Dave and their children and grandchildren.

The census images displayed on this site are usually not complete census pages.   Complete pages would take too long to download, so only the areas of the page relevant to the household of interest in the title are displayed.   If another household containing related individuals is on the same page - and I notice this! - then that other household is also included.   Large family units often spill over onto a second page.  In such cases, the 2 pages are combined into a single image.

In order to view census information, you can use three different approaches.  These are listed below.

Method 1 (Individual record) Find the record of the individual who interests you.

Method 1 is a new method recommended for finding census images.   In the top section of the individual's record, there are usually census events.  These have a drop-down arrow.   If you click the census arrow for a year, you will see some census information for the individual.   You may see a table displaying information about every individual who was in the same household in that year.   If you click the Image link above the table, in most cases you will see an extract from the census page.   If you click the Transcript link above the table, you will see more detail about the census entry.

Method 2 (general census image search) You may also search for census images by clicking on Media/UK Census (or USA Census) in the menu at the top of each page.   For the UK, a large number of census entries will be listed.   You will need to enter some information in the search box to limit the number of entries displayed.  Entering the year number or a surname will usually help.

Then just click on the thumbnail or the underlined image title for the census record that interests you.

The display you see will be part of the page that covers the household your individual belonged to, plus a little information about one or more individuals.

Method 3 (Individual record) The method described here was the standard method of finding census images from an individual display.   Because most census data has been converted to the new improved display described under Method 1 above, this method will now be available only seldom.

Find the record of the individual who interests you.   From the bottom section of the individual's display, find the section labelled UK Census.   Then just click on the thumbnail or the underlined image title for the census year that interests you.

The display you see will be part of the page that covers the household your individual belonged to, plus a little information about one or more individuals.
