UK Birth, Marriage, Death (BMD) sources

 Introduction

The recording of the main life events in the UK has been performed since the 1500s.   Parish records provided the sole source of the records of these events before 30 June 1837.   From 1 July 1837, the recording of these events via birth, marriage and death certificates issued via civil registration became compulsory.   Parish records continued of course, but the Civil Registration Index (CRI) now provides the only national repository of all events for the genealogist.
