Married:
- Witnesses to the marriage were A R Bartlett and M V Colgate, both army comrades of Harry.
Strangely, both bride and groom gave the wrong details for their fathers' names. Lil gave her father's name as Bernard Ferguson (not Robert) and described him as a metal worker. Harry gave his father's name as Benjamin Charles Nevitt Clewes Oliphant, (his adoptive father whom he seldom saw because he lived in Jamaica) and his father's occupation as secretary. The Christian names given were a mix of names of his 'father' and his father's brother.
They were married by licence.
Harry and Lil had no children, a source of great sadness to them. In 1953, they were told they would never have any children, and decided to adopt. The planned adoption of a baby girl was denied them at the last minute in about 1955, when the girl's mother changed her mind. They also tried fostering, but this too didn't work out as they hoped. They gave up trying to have any sort of family.
