Married:
- As a soldier at the end of World War II, Irene's father Gerald found himself stationed in Southern Austria, in a railway town named Villach. At Christmas time that year, he and some fellow soldiers were invited for a social evening by an Austrian lady Julie Steiner, who had fond memories of the English from her time spent as an au pair in London, UK before the war. Julie also invited some Austrians, including her cousin, Paula Mitterer. Gerald took one look at Paula and was smitten. After an unusual courtship - Gerald spoke little German, Paula no English - they married in Villach in 1947. The newly weds came to Bletchley to live.
