- Theresia (Resi) had quite an unusual childhood. Her mother's parents considered that Peter Mitterer was not good enough for their daughter Theresa, and therefore, although their daughter was pregnant, they hid her from him, and threatened reprisals if he did not stay away. Peter's father was so worried by these threats that somehow he raised the money to allow Peter to sail to Canada. Peter was given just a few days notice of his departure.
Peter promised Theresa that he would send for her and Resi as soon as he was properly settled in Canada. For whatever reason, they stayed in Austria. Theresa had another child, a son. The father of this child is unknown. Eventually, in times of great hardship, when her daughter Resi was 8 years old, Theresa decided to go to live and work in England where an older sister Olga was already living. She could not take Resi with her. So Resi was looked after by her grandparents, her father's parents. The grandparents had 2 children, Paula and Otto, who were very close to Resi in age. The change must have been difficult for her. She spoke only Slavish with her mother's family, and now she had to learn to speak German.
On leaving school, Resi decided to become a hairdresser. She did well. But eventually, at the age of 21, her father's wish that she should join him and his new family in Calgary in Canada prevailed. Peter sent her the fare for the journey. So, in November 1949, at the age of 21, she again faced a new life, once again not knowing the language. She had met her father only once, in 1948, before she left to join him.
