    • Matthew was a soldier in the Boer War. He served in the 3rd Battalion of the Grenadier Guards, army record no 6786 : 7 years service
      His police service record shows his date of discharge from the army as 3 March 1913, but this was probably 1903.

      It is not entirely clear when he joined the police force, but it was on or before 11 June 1904, just a few months before his marriage.

      On 1 July 1904 he was appointed to North Wirral division at New Brighton station. Five years later, on 1 March 1909 he was moved to Thornton Hough in the South Wirral division. Then on 1 Aug 1910 he was moved to North Wirral division, at Poulton station Wallasey.

      At some point he became a sergeant in the Wallasey force. His daughter Muriel believes he was an inspector.

      A description of Matthew when he joined the police force is as follows:

      Height: 5ft 9 and three quarters,age: 25, blue eyes, brown hair,fresh complexion and marks: scar on the back of his left hand. [12, 13]
